We have established committee members within the group to support and promote our Branch activities; we are currently in the process of finalising a number of new initiatives which will help to grow the branch and support our work.

Our Vision

Our vision for the branch is to connect like-minded professionals who want to give something back within the region. We will have a full calendar with an event at least monthly. Events will include webinars, panel discussions and face-to-face meetings with a chance for more interaction and visits to member’s locations and other interesting venues. We hope to provoke discussion and debate, as well as learning.

At the beginning we expect to have more presence in Switzerland, where we started, and neighbouring countries. However, we aim to quickly expand into other countries with events and new members. While the common language of such an international branch will be English, we are also open to support events in local language.

We would like to receive ideas and suggestions and would be delighted for branch members to request topics and offer to organize sessions. The committee are all Occupational Safety and Health professionals, so we would especially welcome ideas on other risk management topics.

As we grow as a branch, we aim to:

• Raise the profile of risk management within the region

Ghana is one of the fast growing and influential countries in the West Africa with a vibrant and successful business climate that has continued to attract local and foreign investors. The increased economic activity in the manufacturing, infrastructural development and extractive industries has not only highlighted the increased health, safety and risk profile at operational levels.

Motivation for the formation of the Ghana Branch of IIRSM stems from the increasing stringent OH&S legislation, the development of economic policies, increased concern expressed by interested various parties and the need for strong leadership in matters relating to safety and risk management.

What we intend to do (Our services)

IIRSM Ghana Branch will offer advisory, advocacy and consultancy services, including but not limited to:

• Advise on best practices in occupational health, safety, environment and risk management

• Provide professional and student members opportunities for mentoring, forum to meet and share ideas and best practice.

• Promote IIRSM membership, awareness and growth in Ghana and other African Countries.

• Raise the profile and benefits of an integrated approach to managing occupational health, safety, environment and other Business related and social risks.

• Collaborate and develop partnerships with local government and organisations.

• Share information via webinars, events and meetings.

• Develop student memberships and relationships with associated educational institutes/universities.

• Act as a catalyst to boost the growing need for a strong and dynamic force to strengthen and build the local Health, Safety, environment and Risk management capacity needed to meet the current growing demand in Ghana and beyond.

Specific Member Benefits

The branch will offer members an opportunity to participate in training, development and promotion of health, safety and risk management awareness in Ghana and beyond our shores. Members will specifically benefit from:

Local Key Partnerships/MoUs

The Branch will forge mutually beneficial relationships and collaborate with all local and international Professionals Risk Management Institutions and Governmental Agencies in Ghana, i.e.:

• Governmental Agencies in Ghana, such as:

  •  Association of Ghana Industries (AGI),

  • Ghana Standards Authority (GSA),

  • Food and Drugs Authority (FDA)

  • National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO)

  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

  • Factories Inspectorate Division (FID) of Ministry of Labour and Employment,

  • Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) , etc.

It is the intention of IIRSM Ghana Branch to collaborate fully with key stakeholders in finding practical and pragmatic solutions to matters relating to health, safety, environment and risk management within Ghana.

Our Meetings

As a newly established group, the Ghana Branch will be holding virtual meetings on monthly based meetings, as we build and grow our membership.

Our meetings are held at 7:30pm every first Thursday of the month on Zoom. Meeting days will be revised periodically, as may be required, to suit the growing needs of the Branch.

Due to the geographical nature of KSA, most meetings will be held virtually as the focus of the branch is to engage all main areas of the country, including Jeddah, Mekkah, Amliuj, Madina and Sharma. Once we’ve established our footprint, we hope to see satellite branches in each of these areas.

What we hope to achieve is the establishment of an HSE standard that is Nationally accepted and implemented.

The purpose of the branch is to offer support and assist KSA in the development and implementation of a standard safety procedure, and to have like-minded people working together on this through the IIRSM and other KSA bodies such as Ministry of Health and Ministry of Interior.

The aims of the branch are to:    

• Act as a support hub for risk professionals in the region.

• Promote IIRSM in KSA through meetings and speakers attending key events in the country.

• Facilitate member development and support CPD for all, not only members.

• Support businesses with solutions to risk issues.

• Work with regulators in developing risk frameworks for KSA in line with the 2030 vision.

• Work with educational institutes in developing risk modules into educational curriculums.

• Integrate HSE into the business risk matrix (take HSE out of the silo).

• Create a platform for exchanging information with a wide support network.

How will we achieve this?

We can only achieve our vision and goals in KSA if we have active participation from members and non-members. We must give our members value for money and bring our message to the companies our members work for, showing the management the value of good risk management; including cost savings, increased production, decreases in accidents and incidents, lowering insurance costs, etc.

We will undertake the following activities for our network:

• Communicate with our branch members about the latest news and updates from IIRSM’s head office on a quarterly basis.

• Support our members on their CPD journey to become Fellows of our Institute.

• Provide updates and small information sessions at our meetings.

• Work with training providers and event organizers to gain discounted attendance at events and on courses.

• Share information with our members and support them in different areas.

• Develop the branch website page to help members access information.

• Develop our less experienced members on presentation skills to assist them in developing their confidence and ability to train others.

• Support our members in employment opportunities.

• Create an inclusive branch run by members for members supported by a committee.

Within the London Branch we have a diverse and skilled membership. Our aim is to provide a means with which we can collaborate and share information, experience and knowledge to the benefit of the members, IIRSM and other risk management professionals.

The role of managing risk in any organisation is key to its success. So, we want our Branch, and its culture, to be open, thought provoking and provocative. Something members want to actively engage with and be part of.

As branch chair, I’m privileged to lead this branch, which is part of a charity supporting people and organisations to manage risk well. We champion risk management to drive positive change through practical education and support.

We have a growing local community of over 200, representing people from many risk disciplines - compliance, health and safety, sustainability and environmental management, quality management, security, project management, etc.

Since 2015, our members have continued to collectively give their time and knowledge to support the branch and its activities.

The North East and Cumbria Branch has been established to provide IIRSM members across the region with a platform to actively engage with other risk management professionals and give a more direct route for members to access the institute and continue their professional development.

We will provide a forum for members to develop their risk management knowledge through a variety of approaches including:

• Presentations by subject matter specialists

• Peer-to-peer discussions

• Round-table events

• On-site learning events hosted by outside organisations

• Access to the wider IIRSM

• Network

• Signposting to a range of information sources.

We also want to ensure that the branch provides value to members by exploring a range of risk-based topics and providing an opportunity to explore new and emerging areas of risk. We aim to ensure that all members have the opportunity to contribute to discussions and access subject matter specialists.

The branch wants to support its members wishing to continually develop their risk management knowledge and skills by linking to and providing information about IIRSM initiatives and resources.

We will look to work with other organisations to promote effective risk management and encourage the integration of risk management into wider business activities and will provide the opportunity for Branch members to share learning and best practice in key risk areas. This will also support IIRSM as it looks to develop robust partnering arrangements with external partners.

We regularly meet and enable local IIRSM members to interact with other likeminded professionals.

The North West Region of the IIRSM recognises that learning is a continual improvement process that doesn’t stop with the completion of a training course. With this in mind the branch intends to provide an added resource to IIRSM members to gain further tools and experiences in the area of occupational health & safety, risk management and additional opportunities.

To make our branch credible, sensible and proactive, we need people from all walks of life who are interested in realistic, sensible and pragmatic approaches to occupational health & safety and risk management. We need you to share in our meetings and discussions, and get involved in our activities. We also need people to share their experiences, knowledge and passion to help us all as health, safety and risk professionals maintain a holistic approach to business and employee needs.

Once again the North West Region of the IIRSM is under the chairmanship of our founding and past chairman Lee Marsh, who helped to facilitate the first IIRSM branch in 2011 and served as chairman for the first four years, which lead to a number of branch members working toward Fellowship status, branch members presenting their case studies of safety improvement programmes including the challenges and successes. Having once again taken the role of Chairman; Lee is keen to return to the core foundations that established the group of likeminded professionals coming together and sharing their knowledge and experiences within the group. So if you are interesting to getting involved in the North West Region of the IIRSM in a designated role of secretary, membership officer, communication co-ordinator, etc… then contact Lee to discuss.

Whilst we hope to hold face-to-face meetings with members the focus of the branch is to support members through webinars for the time being as these provide a means to minimise disruption to members who can attend events when live from the comfort of wherever they may be or through a recording of the event that will be uploaded to the IIRSM YouTube Channel.
