James Young, Support Services Director, Al Jaber Energy Services LLC has shared his experience of the NEBOSH IIRSM Certificate in Managing Risk.

Why did you go for this course?

“I wanted to explore management of risk and coincidentally came across the NEBOSH IIRSM Certificate in Managing Risk course via LinkedIn. After looking at the related information further, the syllabus of the course and its structure suited me perfectly. I wanted to expand my knowledge on risk and risk management and consider it more holistically."

Tell us about your role and responsibilities

“I am the Support Services Director for an engineering, procurement and construction company that provide goods and services to the construction and oil and gas sectors. My responsibility is to provide support services to all business functions, specifically to key areas such as risk management, business strategy, planning and efficiency, due diligence and change management.”

What elements of the course did you enjoy most and why?

“The Risk Appetite section drew my interest. I relate it to the challenges organisations face to embrace this process where fear of ‘pushing the boat out too far’ isn’t always detrimental and logical mitigation has been considered and decided upon.

Will you use what you have learned in your work?

“Absolutely. I feel more confident now that I have a far better understanding of risk and the risk management framework to improve the organisation’s opportunities. I will also introduce ISO31000:2018 to our organisation.”

Would you recommend this course to others?

“Yes, I would. The course is easily accessible, well-structured and interactive, and provided sufficient examples to further emphasise the message. Thinking that you know enough about risk and resting on your laurels can be a risk in itself.”
